What is Ozone?

Ozone, also known as O3, is the free-radical form of oxygen used extensively for safely sanitizing and cleaning a wide variety of products on a commercial and industrial basis.  It is a highly reactive gas that occurs naturally in the Earth’s upper and lower atmospheres, essentially natures disinfectant. It can also be man-made by way of an electrical discharge through pure oxygen or dry air.  Ozone is the strongest disinfectant oxidant of the common disinfecting agents such as hydrogen peroxide, bleach, and iodine. It is a colourless gas and has an odor usually associated with the smell of the air during and after thunder storms.

Why we use Ozone.

As a cleaning agent, Ozone is up to 3200 times faster acting and up to 150 times more powerful than chlorine bleach.  As a result, Ozone rapidly kills bacteria, viruses, fungus and other pathogens.  Further, Ozone also does not leave any residue on materials after treatment making it very safe to use as a sanitizing agent and environmentally friendly.

How Ozone disinfects and deodorizes.

Ozone is highly reactive and latches onto the bacteria, viruses and microbes living on and in the surfaces of your gear.  Once Ozone attaches itself to these micro-organisms it reacts to them by breaking them down and beginning to destroy them on contact.  These micro-organisms have membranes, essentially an outer layer or coat, that protects them and keeps them alive. Ozone breaks down these outer walls and destroys the micro-organisms. This process also ensures these micro-organisms are not able to mutate.  Ozone has a very small molecular structure and its gaseous nature allows it to penetrate into small, hard to reach crevices in sports equipment areas and materials that is often missed and/or not possible with other cleaning methods.

Facts about Ozone.

  • Kills up to 98% of bacteria in sports equipment, not just what’s on the surface
  • Doesn’t allow microorganisms to mutate
  • Greatly reduces the risk of infection
  • Eliminates odor-causing micro-organisms
  • Chemical-free, natural and safe to use
